New 93-room hotel, spa coming to Campbell River Golf & Country Club

The Campbell River Golf & Country Club will soon be a ‘golf destination’.

That’s according to city councillor Charlie Cornfield, as he voiced his excitement for the proposed five-storey, 93-room hotel to be built at 700 Petersen Road next to the golf club.

The development permit for the project got the green light from members of city council on Monday (June 14th), opening the door for construction to potentially begin this summer.

In addition to a spa, plans also call for an indoor pool, and three maintenance buildings. There are also future plans to add a banquet facility.

Councillor Colleen Evans says they’ve been very excited to see a project like this come forward in the community. She adds it’s a chance to create jobs, as well career development opportunities through North Island College.

Councillor Claire Molglove says the project has been a long time coming, suggesting that it’ll be a ‘sensational’ addition to Campbell River.

With the development permit approved, the developer must pay the City a performance security fee for general landscaping at 125 per cent (roughly $375,000) of the estimated amount within 12 weeks of the approval date.

What’s happening to the popular wedding chapel at the golf course?

During council’s meeting, Coun. Cornfield asked what would happen to the wedding chapel at the golf course once construction gets underway.

“My understanding is that they proposed to keep it, but probably move it to a different location on the site,” city planner Meghan Norman said.

Cornfield said it’s a very nice building and recalled when it was originally constructed. “A lot of local history there,” he added.
