Campbell Riverites could be seeing more housing developments pop up around town.
After last week’s council meeting, city manager Deborah Sargent told Vista Radio “once again, the agenda had a number of development applications for council’s consideration.”
Now, after reviewing the applications, Sargent says “several public hearings will be coming up.”
Up to 70 rental units have been proposed by WestUrban Developments. The Campbell River-based company wants to build a five-story apartment building at 854 South Island Highway.
Further in town, 20 new units have been proposed by Habitat for Humanity. The non-profit is looking to build more affordable housing units 461 Hilchey Road.
And at 2141 Willis Road, a developer wants to rezone the property before dividing it into separate lots. Ten duplexes are planned for this location.
All in all, Sargent says these potential projects would add around 100 more housing units in town. She says it’s just further proof Campbell River “continues to grow and change.”
But news of more housing developments places focus on infrastructure: On Tuesday, the City said the sewer capacity in the south end of town reached its maximum capacity.

This means the homeowners expecting to move into 20 new houses in the WillowPoint area – between Highway 19A and Jubilee Parkway – won’t be able to do so anytime soon, because the houses won’t be hooked up to the sewer.
“This affects people looking forward to building or moving into new homes in this area. We are now advising people with 20 new homes that, unfortunately, we must delay occupancy permits,” said deputy city manager Ron Neufeld.
“To help keep people working, the City will issue building permits on the understanding that occupancy will not be granted until we have additional sewer capacity for this area.”
