You can be better prepared for a tsunami by taking part in exercises next week.
The Strathcona Regional District has announced four upcoming exercises for Tsunami Preparedness Week, with the aim of getting community members better prepared in the event of a tsunami.
The exercises will focus on tsunamis generated from the Alaska-Aleutian Subduction Zone, which produce the second highest tsunami risk to the communities in the region, with waves ranging from 2.9 meters in height for Yuquot to 6.8 meters in height for Gold River after an earthquake in that zone.
For the highest risk, it goes to tsunamis generated from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which sees wave heights up to 12.4 meters for Kyuquot, and 7.5 meters for Tahsis.
District chair Mark Baker says preparing for tsunamis goes beyond the individual, as it’s about building community resilience.
“Emergencies can be overwhelming, but when we come together, we’re better equipped to respond and recover,” said Baker.
They say the exercises include two High Ground Hikes, door-to-door evacuation, a tsunami siren test and alertable notification test. They’ll take place in Tahsis, Zeballos, Ehatis, Oclucje, and Gold River.

First exercise runs April 14 at 11:00 a.m., with the last set for April 17 at 2:30 p.m.
