Police warn of consequences for election sign vandalism

After several days of election sign vandalism in Campbell River, police are reminding the public that the penalties are serious.

Constable Maury Tyre says interfering with election signs carries penalties under the Criminal Code and Canada Elections Act. He says holding fair elections is an essential part of a democratic society.

“Part of that fairness is respecting the rights of your fellow citizens to campaign for the party and candidate of their choice,” he says. “Especially in an election, if you do not agree with a party’s platform, you have legal choices to express your feelings and opinions. The most important thing you can do is cast your vote.”

Tyre says Campbell River have received three official reports of election sign theft and vandalism since the federal election campaign started, but there have been other incidents that have not been reported.

Anyone with information about sign vandalism or theft can make an anonymous report to CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or directly contact local police at 250-286-6221.
