King Charles III Coronation Medals to be awarded in Campbell River and Powell River

11 people look to be honoured with King Charles III Coronation Medals this coming week.

The medals are given to residents who have made significant contributions to Canada and their home province, with two ceremonies set to honour the 11 recipients in Campbell River and Powell River.

North Island – Powell River MP Rachel Blaney says the ceremonies are part of an ongoing series of events celebrating medal recipients across Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

She says for the Campbell River ceremony, seven recipients will be celebrated, with the remaining four coming from Powell River.

One of the Campbell River recipients is Kyle Goodrich, who served as sheriff and was known for his generosity of spirit. He passed away in April last year after battling cancer, with his surviving wife Kerry to receive the award.

The remaining six recipients are Shelagh Germyn, known for The Women For Women 5K, 10K, and 15km Fundraising Event, former Fire Chief Ian Baikie, former Campbell River Community Foundation Chair Judy Shepley, Vancouver Island Mental Health Society Housing Manager Kristina Schwanicke, Immigration Women’s Centre volunteer Khammy Quan, and former Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Rescue Specialist Thomas Hall.

The ceremony takes place at Eagles Main Hall on March 5, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 4:15 p.m.

For Powell River, the recipients are Jane Waterman, who helped start the Texada Island Restorative Justice Program, Elder and knowledge keeper of the Tla’amin Nation Elsie Paul, Commander for Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Kenneth Stewart, and Elder Doreen Point.

That ceremony takes place at Tla’amin gym on March 8. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., with the ceremony starting at 2:00 p.m.
