City receives workplace safety award

The City of Campbell River is being recognized for achieving the gold standard when it comes to workplace safety.

Mike Roberts with the 2024 BC Municipal Safety Association presented council on Tuesday with the 2024 Organizational Safety Excellence Award.

“It recognizes local governments that go above and beyond in implementing effective practices. Practices that protect your workforce, enhance their overall well-being and significantly reduce workplace injuries and insurance costs for the municipality,” Roberts said.

The application-based award comes a year after the city received a workplace safety improvement award.

Roberts says city staff have really bought in to workplace safety.

“Staff have embraced the safety journey. I’ve heard about their active participation in training programs, their commitment to return to work initiatives and their due diligence when it comes to reporting incidents and safety concerns,” he explained.

“Your team’s dedication to identifying hazards early and addressing them proompty have been instrumental in creating a safer worker environment,” Roberts added.

Roberts joined city councillors and the city’s safety committee after his speech to present them with a crystal trophy.

The BC Municipal Safety Association is an independent, non-profit organization aimed at improving workplace safety across the province.
