Free overnight parking in Tyee Plaza remains, to relief of Quadra commuters

Quadra Islanders who travel to Campbell River for work can breathe easy, overnight parking remains free at the Tyee Plaza.

Quadra Island director Robyn Mawhinney says it’s good news for working travelers who walk on the ferry, and drive to work from the plaza. She thanked staff for researching the issue.

“I believe that it will provide peace of mind to the handful of Quadra folks who have a vehicle on this side for access to their employment,” she said at the Strathcona Regional District’s board meeting this past week.

After several Islanders received notices on their vehicles demanding they pay for a monthly pass, regional district staff were asked to look into the rules for parking in the plaza. They had to dive deep into provincial archives, but found the answer — documents from 1960 declaring the site is “a parking lot for the free and unrestricted use of the public.”

The declaration remains in force today, it covers 475 general parking spots and 10 disabled spots.
