Downtown parking lot eyed as potential highrise development site

The city wants to rezone a downtown parking lot it owns to allow for a 12-storey high rise.

At this week’s regular meeting, council will discuss recommendations from staff to rezone the parking lot across Cedar Street from the community centre. A report from the planning department says the rezoning will be consistent with the city’s Official Community Plan, and will encourage development and downtown revitalization.

Staff recommend it be changed to “Commercial 1-B,” which allows for buildings between 8 and 12 stories. They are also recommending the rezoning go ahead without a public hearing.

The property is currently used as free parking by many people who work downtown.

Council will look at the proposal at the Sept. 7 regular meeting.
