The family of a man shot to death by police in Campbell River two years ago filed a civil lawsuit against police and government on Friday.
The suit names the Ministry of Public Safety, Solicitor General, and four unnamed RCMP officers. They are seeking damages for Jared Lowndes’ death.
Laura Holland, his mother, says in a statement published by the Union of BC Indian Chiefs the lawsuit is a message for RCMP. Her lawyer, Neil Chantler, says Lowndes’ death was a senseless killing, and that RCMP appear to have created the situation that led to Jared’s death.
Lowndes was shot in the Tim Hortons drive through in Willow Point on June 8, 2021. During the altercation a police officer was stabbed and wounded and a police dog was stabbed to death.
