Proposed cell tower will bring enhanced service to We Wai Kai First Nation

Telus wants to install a new cell tower in Campbell River, bringing enhanced service for the We Wai Kai First Nation along with it.

In a statement, Telus tells Vista Radio the demand for enhanced wireless networks throughout the city keeps increasing, “as more of us are working from home and staying virtually connected to family and friends.”

With this in mind, it’s proposing a new cell tower be built on the Nation’s lands west of Highway 19A. Telus says the tower will not only beef up service for the Nation’s community, but also people living on the west side of the highway.

“A reliable wireless signal is not only important for residents and local businesses to stay connected on a daily basis, but also because it enhances safety around town as more than 70 per cent of all calls to 911 these days come from a cell phone,” Telus says.

“We are currently in the public consultation phase of the process, which includes working collaboratively with the local community and members of the We Wai Kai First Nation,” it adds. “We look forward to keeping residents updated and look forward to enhancing service in Campbell River.”

We’ve reached out to the We Wai Kai First Nation for comment.
