CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – The Campbell River school district has approved its budget for 2019-2020.
School District 72 is allocating $71 million for the upcoming school year. According to an announcement from the school district, there is a budget surplus of $308, 880 but the board decided to draw $533, 394 from the district’s unrestricted reserves.
This allows the district to make the additions and changes that the district management recommended. The changes and additions also take into account parents’ feedback.
The board approved funding for several service additions, which include
- $10, 000 for a custodial helper position
- $150, 000 for contingency of unfunded wage increases
- $10, 000 for two HR secretarial positions to move from 10-month to 12-month positions
- $167, 385 to improve custodial service
- $30, 000 for Indigenous elders in schools
- $50, 000 for a .5 full-time literacy position
- $25, 000 for mental health training for staff to support students
- $20, 000 for a .2 full-time careers position at Robron Centre
- $12, 354 for two new student supervisor positions
Operational expenses will also be funded using the district’s surplus to ensure they continue. These expenses include:
- $300, 000 for strategic priorities
- $10, 000 for critical incidence
- $50, 000 for furniture renewal
- $40, 000 for training
Development of the new budget involved representatives from the Campbell River District Teachers’ Association, CUPE Local 723, the Campbell River Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association, as well as district management.
The new budget was approved during the Tuesday May 28th public meeting.
