CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – More construction is on the way for the waterfront along Highway 19A.
The second phase of the Waterfront Project will start in mid-May with new water and sewer lines coming between 1st Avenue and Rockland Road.
A new water main will also be installed in the one-kilometre southern portion of this stretch.
Work on a new sewer line between the Maritime Heritage Centre and 1st Avenue was completed last year.
According to a release from the city, underground work will carry through the summer and finish in the fall.
The stretch of road will remain open, but single-lane alternating traffic may be put in place from time to time.
The city is advising drivers to expect slower speeds, as well as limited access to roadside traffic while work is ongoing.
For those using the seawalk, routes around the work zones will be created, but regular foot traffic flow will be disrupted at times. Detour signs will be posted onsite.
During phase one of the Waterfront Project, parts of Highway 19A were temporarily repaved, with final paving work done in April.
This year’s work will set the stage for the project’s phase three in 2020, including more above-ground improvements along Highway 19A, roundabout installation at Rockland Road and upgrade of three pump stations.
Phase three construction will require highway closure near Rockland Road.
More information on closure plans will be released as closer to construction time.
