CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – A team from Carihi High won Campbell River’s first youth hackathon.
Mr. Bagley’s Bagels is made up of students Colby Ernst, Scott Henry, Franco Pellegrin and Riley Teramura.
Their idea is to improve transportation options for young people in the city. The solution they offered is implementing a bike-sharing program, which won them first place. Members of Mr. Bagley’s Bagels won $1, 000 in cash prize, as well as an opportunity to present their idea city council in June.
During the hackathon, the team members gathered data to support their idea, addressed issues on how to track lost or stolen bikes, how to cover costs, and completed two 3D models of the bike dock.
The hackathon brought students from grades 9 to 12 to come up with ideas on how to make the city youth-friendly. According to a release from the city, students had a little under 10 hours to research, program, create 3D models, websites, and presentations for their ideas which they pitched at the end.
Timberline Secondary’s team were second prize winners. The team coded and designed an app that allows young people to host events and let others know about it.
In all, 28 students participated in the hackathon.
All of the team’s solutions can be found at the city’s hackathon website.
