CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C – Spirit Square is going to get a make over next month.
According to Stacey Oakley, assistant curator of engagement for the Campbell River Art Gallery, a Quebec artist will be conducting a workshop for youths aged 13-18 on September 12th. The group will be wallpapering the poles in Spirit Square in an installation called Bright New World.
Dominique Pétrin, a visual artist from Montreal, will join the gallery team for a two-week installation and series of youth workshops. The artist “combines and remixes patterns and images from across our visual world”, and will guide students as they choose colours and patterns. They will be installed in the Square and will stay up throughout the fall.
Interested youths can bring friends and work in teams or pairs. Admission is $40.00, or “pay what you can.”
Oakley said they’ve had a lot of interest from youths and are looking forward to the event.
“Up and coming DJ, Fire Tiger, will be playing while we paper the town. We’re very excited.”
The installation is funded in part by a British Columbia Arts Council Youth Engagement grant.
