NIC Artist Talk speaker to focus on housing, displacement

North Island College’s Artist Talk Series is set to return Feb. 6th with an international artist in attendance.

Connie Michele Morey, an artist whose work explores the relationships between displacement, resource management and mismanagement, labour and housing will be sharing her insights and practices with NIC students, local artists and community members.

Sara Vipond, series coordinator and NIC Fine Arts and Design department chair, says Morey has exhibited and performed across Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia.

“We’re excited to welcome this talented artist to Artist Talk,” says Vipond. “Connie’s performative work is interwoven with a unique perspective that will offer our audience an engrossing glimpse into the creative process.”

Her recent work, “Project Homesick” and “Roof (Over My Head),” uses site-specific performative structures made mostly of reclaimed wood and repurposed wool blankets.

Morey earned a practice-based Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Victoria in 2017, with a focus on studio practice, philosophy and art education.

She also holds a master’s degree in education, with a focus on art education, from UVic and earned her BFA with distinction in visual arts from the University of Lethbridge.

Admission is free and all are welcome to attend Morey’s presentation at the Stan Hagen Theatre on the Comox Valley campus from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
